Fisher Cats beat Reading

MANCHESTER — The New Hampshire Fisher Cats collected eight hits against three Reading pitchers Monday night, and they made the most of them.

Second baseman Ryan Schimpf and left fielder Brian Van Kirk each hit a solo home run for New Hampshire, which posted a 6-3 victory at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

Van Kirk, center fielder Adam Loewen and catcher A.J. Jimenez each had two hits for the Fisher Cats, who never trailed in the game.

New Hampshire starter Deck McGuire (4-7) pitched six innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked none.

Alan Farina pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Fisher Cats, who raised their record to 36-40. New Hampshire also received a scoreless inning from Evan Crawford.

Reading, which had 10 hits in the loss, dropped to 32-43.Reading third baseman Maikel Franco had three hits in his fifth Double-A game and raised his average to .524. Franco entered the contest batting .471 with two home runs and five RBIs in four games since being recalled from Single-A Clearwater.

The teams play again tonight at 7. The scheduled starting pitchers are Reading’s Jesse Biddle (3-7, 3.29) and New Hampshire’s Ryan Tepera (6-5, 4.43).
