Red Sox outscore Blue Jays

Jonny Gomes hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning as the host Red Sox shaded struggling Toronto, 7-5, on Friday night in Boston.

The Red Sox loaded the bases with one out before Gomes greeted Brett Cecil with the go-ahead single past a diving Maicer Izturis. Jarrod Saltalamacchia drew a five-pitch walk to make it 7-5, and the Boston bullpen held on from there to hand the Blue Jays their fourth loss in five games.

Andrew Miller (1-2) earned the victory with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while Koji Uehara struck out two in a perfect ninth for his second save in as many nights. Neil Wagner (1-2) absorbed the loss for Toronto after allowing the first two Boston hitters to reach base in the seventh.

The Red Sox chased Toronto starter Josh Johnson early, forcing him to throw 90 pitches over just 3 1/3 innings. Stephen Drew belted a two-run triple to straightaway center field in the second, Mike Napoli added an RBI single in the third and Jacoby Ellsbury had a two-run single in the fourth.

Toronto stormed back with three runs in the fifth, closed the gap to 5-4 on an Izturis sacrifice fly in the sixth and drew even on Edwin Encarnacion's solo blast in the seventh off Andrew Bailey that just cleared the center field wall.GAME NOTEBOOK: Johnson surrendered five runs on eight hits while striking out five. Boston counterpart Allen Webster was charged with four runs on six hits over six innings. ... Drew left in the fourth inning with tightness in his hamstring. ... Encarnacion has 15 home runs in 40 road games so far in 2013.Orioles 4, Yankees 3: Nate McLouth hit a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh as Baltimore came back to take the opener from visiting New York.

Manny Machado doubled in a pair and Adam Jones added an RBI single for the Orioles, who have won three of four. Rookie Kevin Gausman (1-3) allowed three hits in 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first major-league win and Tommy Hunter worked a scoreless final two innings for his second save.

Robinson Cano had three hits and an RBI as the Yankees lost their third straight game. CC Sabathia (8-6) took a no-hitter through the first five innings but fell off late and ended up allowing four runs on five hits in seven frames.

McLouth and Alexi Casilla led off the sixth with back-to-back singles before coming in on Machado's one-out double to right-center, and Jones tied it with a two-out RBI single to left. McLouth came up again with two outs in the seventh and blasted a 1-0 slider over the wall in right to put Baltimore on top.

Tigers 6, Rays 3: Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-4 with two homers and Max Scherzer became the first pitcher in 27 years to begin the season 12-0 as visiting Detroit defeated Tampa Bay.

Cabrera finished with three RBIs and Prince Fielder added a two-run homer.

Scherzer allowed three runs on four hits while fanning nine over seven innings to become baseball's first 12-0 starter since Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox opened the 1986 seasone runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings. ... New York will reportedly save $18.7 million on Mark Teixeira's contract due to insurance policies. Teixeira will miss the rest of the season due to wrist surgery. ... Machado's double was his major-league leading 37th of the season.
