A special celebration for New Boston

NEW BOSTON — If the weather cooperates, the town’s Fourth of July fireworks show promises to be something to see as the 250th anniversary celebration continues.

For 82 years, New Boston has pulled out all the stops for Independence Day. The parade that winds through town is a perennial favorite, and the events at the 4-H fairgrounds offer lots of entertainment, but this year is going to be extra special, said Kerri Kelley, chairman of the 250th committee.

“We’re going to have our big parade at 10 a.m. as we always do and we’re expecting the floats to be spectacular,” Kelley said. “This year the theme is ‘New Boston History,’ and it’s going to be interesting to see what people come up with.”

But it’s when the sun goes down that the real magic is expected to happen, said Kelley.

“We’ve really upped the fireworks this year so as long as the weather cooperates, they’re going to be amazing,” she said.

The fireworks will be set off at the 4-H fairgrounds at dusk.

For the organizers of the town’s 250th celebration, Fourth of July marks a sort of halfway point in a year’s worth of activities, and Kelley said everyone’s pleased at how all of the events held thus far have turned out.

“To have 100 plus people show up at every event tells us we’re doing something right,” she said. “But we’re still looking forward to the other events we have planned through the rest of the year.”

On July 7, the Historical Society will host an open house from 1 to 4 p.m., and at 6 p.m. there will be a band concert and ice cream social at the Gazebo.

Then on July 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Historical Society, folks will learn how to research their family histories with Christine Sharbrough.
