UNH will test outdoor notification system Friday

DURHAM — The University of New Hampshire will test its outdoor notification system on Friday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The regular test includes a siren, a “canned” message and a recording signaling the end of the test.

Sirens are located on the roof of the Memorial Union Building, the roof of Morse Hall, A-Lot and the dirt parking lot near the equestrian facility.

The system reaches a mile in each direction and is designed to not only alert the campus community to imminent danger, but to follow up with voice instructions. The two-step approach is called “Alert and Inform” and is designed to reduce confusion and restore order, according to information provided by the town of Durham.
At the same time, the university will send test messages through its alert system to registered cell phone, pager and email accounts, as well as directed communication to all UNH faculty, staff and students.
The entire exercise is expected to last less than 10 minutes.
