Workmanlike effort

Oakland tips Red Sox in 11

Josh Donaldson hit a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh inning and a walk-off RBI single in the 11th as host Oakland beat the Red Sox, 3-2, overcoming a stellar performance by Boston rookie starter Brandon Workman.

Workman, who only had made one relief appearance in the major leagues since being called up on July 9, faced the minimum through six innings and lost his no-hitter when Coco Crisp beat out a grounder to second base for an infield hit leading off the seventh. Two batters later, Donaldson launched a two-run shot to center field, forging a 2-2 tie.

The Red Sox left the bases loaded in the top of the 11th and Chris Young led off the bottom half with a walk against Matt Thornton (0-4), who was making his debut with Boston after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox. Young was sacrificed to second and, two batters later, Donaldson blooped a 1-0 offering from in front of right fielder Daniel Nava, whose throw home was not nearly in time to get Young.
Boston took a 1-0 lead on Dustin Pedroia’s RBI single in the sixth and doubled the advantage on Brock Holt’s run-scoring base hit in the seventh. Workman issued only a walk through the first six frames, but that baserunner was eliminated attempting to steal.

Oakland starter Bartolo Colon allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings in recording his 12th straight quality start. Ryan Cook (2-2) got the win with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out Holt looking to finish the Red Sox’ threat in the 11th.
