FRANKLIN — A man was arrested outside the Family Dollar Store on Central Street Wednesday after police say he left four children in his car as temperatures hit 97 degrees.

A woman passerby saw the children - who range in age from 9 months to 9 years old - and called police just before 4 p.m. Police said all of the car windows were rolled up.

Police went into the store to find the man, who store workers said was purchasing sandwich bags and multiple
decks of playing cards.

The four children were taken to Franklin Regional Hospital as a precautionary measure; all are OK, police said.

Items stolen from the Family Dollar Store were found inside the man's vehicle, which police said had Maine license plates.

Police said the man faces four charges of endangering the welfare of a child and a charge of possession of stolen merchandise.
