As the final minutes ticked down before the 5 p.m. deadline, the City Clerk's office was a study in carefully calculated casualness as some dozen candidates and local politicos waited to see what new candidates would come in under the wire.
There was Phil Greazzo, for one, leaning back in his chair while keeping a close watch on his iPhone. The third-term incumbent Ward 10 alderman waited until 4:59 p.m. precisely to step to the counter and file his papers for another two-year term.
"I file at the very end. I always always do. I think it's more interesting to wait until the last minute," the West Side alderman explained. For one, he said, he learned another challenger, Jane Beaulieu, filed for the seat that day , making the race for Ward 10 alderman a three-way contest. Bill Barry filed for the seat July 8.
Patrick Arnold also was among those milling around until the bitter end when security officer Luis Gonzalez locked the door shut at 5 p.m. sharp.
"We're excited to have Patrick at the top of the ticket," Liz Kulig, chairman of the Manchester City Democrats explained.
Four people are vying for the two alderman at-large slots . The two School Committee-at-Large slots are uncontested during this fall's biennial, non-partisan municipal elections.
The municipal primary will be held Sept. 17. The municipal general election follows Nov. 5.
All of the aldermanic ward races are contested except three: Wards 5, 7 and 8.
In the races for School Committee, all but Wards 1 and 4 are contested.
Diane L. Guimond is challenging incumbent Welfare Commissioner Paul R.R. Martineau.
