1,000 drivers stopped at government checkpoints Friday yielding 27 arrests

Three police sobriety checkpoints late Friday screened more than 1,000 vehicles and netted 27 arrests, including a Massachusetts woman who drove through a Salem checkpoint and nearly struck a state trooper, authorities said Saturday.
Evelyn Santiago, 37, of Hyde Park, was arrested for aggravated driving while intoxicated and disobeying a police officer. Police said Santiago drove through the checkpoint on Route 28, nearly striking a trooper before police were able to stop her a short distance later and take her into custody.
State and local police stopped 150 vehicles at the Salem checkpoint, arresting eight, giving numerous warnings and issuing one summons for operating without a license.
Those arrested were: Thomas Brisendine, 26, of Salem, and Matthew Debreceni, 20, of Londonderry, each for transportation of a controlled drug; Kyle Dowd, 32, of Lawrence, Mass., and Ashley Church, 22, of Derry, each for possession of a controlled drug; Linda Fagerstrom, 64, of Salem, for DWI; Sean Oakes, 48, of Seabrook, for DWI subsequent offense and transportation of a controlled drug; and John Silva, 51, of Salem, for DWI subsequent offense.
At a checkpoint on Route 1A in Seabrook, police stopped 688 vehicles, arresting 18 people and placing six teenagers in protective custody.
Those arrested were: Marianela Perez, 36, of Lawrence, Mass., for aggravated DWI; Susan Warcewicz, 49, of Haverhill, Mass., for DWI and possession of a controlled drug; Patrick Natale, 44, of Woburn, Mass., and Charles Poulos, 55, of Merrimack, each for DWI; Christopher Reilly, 51, of Norwood, Mass., DWI subsequent offense; Mark Iannello, 59, of New York, N.Y., Christopher Lippe, 34, of Worcester, Mass., Nicholas Lafayette, 21, of East Longmeadow, Mass., and Krystalis Fianco, 21, of Lawrence, Mass., each for possession of controlled drugs; and Cayce McCall, 30, of Tyngsborough, Mass., for possession of prescription drugs.
Others arrested were Rachel Preston, 19, of Dracut, Mass., Devin Murray, 19, of Groveland, Mass., and Jordan Guditas, 19, of Newburyport, Mass., each for transporting alcohol by a minor; Darren Englelke, 17, of Groveland, Mass., and Marrissa Dellacroce, 18, of Newburyport, Mass., each for unlawful possession of alcohol; Frank Cirone, 36, of Woburn, Mass., and Karen Batten, 21, of Dracut, Mass., each for open container; and Robert Silva, 18, of Reading, Mass., for internal possession of alcohol/prohibitions.
In Portsmouth, police screened 219 drivers at a checkpoint on Lafayette Road, near Mirona Road, netting one arrest. Bradley Birkenfeld, 48, of Rye Beach, was arrested for DWI. He will be arraigned on Aug. 1.
Those charged in Seabrook were given a court date of Aug. 14 or Aug. 15 in the 10th Circuit Court-Seabrook Division. No arrest date was released for those arrested in Salem.
