Intermediate, Junior and Mite division play begins today at the 56th annual Red Ryan CYO Golf Tournament at Derryfield Country Club in Manchester.

Tournament Director Doug Smith said 96 golfers have registered for this year's tournament, including 24 in the Intermediate division and 48 in the Junior division.

The Intermediate Division will feature a new champion since last year's champion C.J. Konkowski of Bretwood Golf Course in Keene — and now at the University of New Hampshire — is not eligible to defend his title in the 16-18-year-old division.

The golfers to watch in this division are the finalists in this year's New Hampshire Golf Association Junior Championship won by Tom Hixon of Rye over Manchester Central and Derryfield CC standout Matt Paradis at the Campbell's Scottish Highlands Golf Course in Salem.

Hixon, who plays out of the Wentworth-by-the-Sea CC, attended St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover before enrolling at the Lee Westwood Golf Academy in Apopka, Fla.

In the Juniors (ages 13-15), last year's champion Joshua Lacasse of Bow has moved on to the Intermediate Division. Last year's runner-up, Brandon Gillis of Nashua, will return as one of the favorites to win the Junior title. Another golfer to watch is 2012 medalist winner Doug Champagne of Bow.

In the Mite Division (under 13) Phillip Schmitz of Amherst will return to defend his title.

Today at 8 a.m., medal play begins to determine the competitors for match play beginning on Wednesday.

There will be three championship flights, each with 16 golfers, in the Junior Division.

The Intermediate and Mite Divisions will have a championship flight of 16 players and a first flight of eight golfers.

On Wednesday beginning at 8 a.m., the match play prelims and quarterfinals will be staged at Derryfield. The semifinals and finals are slated for Thursday beginning at 8 a.m.
