Rays, Price dominate Red Sox

BOSTON — The Rays sent seven batters to the plate in the third inning, with three scoring, on their way to a 5-1 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Wednesday night.

Rays left-hander David Price earned the win, improving to 5-5, with a 3.75 ERA. He needed just 97 pitches, 72 for strikes, going nine innings while giving up five hits with no walks and four strikeotus . It was Price’s third complete game in his last four starts.

Red Sox left-hander Felix Doubront gave up three runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts. He threw 104 pitches, 66 for strikes. Doubront fell to 7-4 with a 3.78 ERA.

The Rays sent seven batters to the plate in the third inning, with three scoring, carrying a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning.

Mike Napoli’s 14th home run of the season, with one out in the seventh, gave Boston its only run of the game.

The Rays added two runs in the eighth. With right-hander Pedro Beato pitching, Wil Myers singled with one out, ending Beato’s outing with left-hander Matt Thornton entering. Luke Scott reached on a fielder’s choice with Myers getting erased at second base. Sean Rodriguez, James Loney and Jose Molina each hit consecutive singles, putting the Rays up, 5-1.
Notes: The Red Sox officially announced an eight-year extension with 2B Dustin Pedroia. ... RHP Clay Buchholz, who has been on the disabled list since June 9 with inflammation in the bursa sac of his right shoulder, threw from 90 feet with increased intensity. There is no timetable yet for his return to the rotation. ... Entering Tuesday’s game LHP Alex Torres had allowed just eight hits in 99 at-bats this season. According to Elias, he will be just the second major league pitcher in the last 50 seasons, since 1964, to allow fewer than 10 hits in the first 100 at-bats of a season against him. The only other pitcher to do so in the last 50 seasons in Cincinnati’s Aroldis Chapman in 2012, when he allowed nine hits in the first 100 at-bats against him. ... Rays top pitching prospect RHP Taylor Guerrieri underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday and is expected to be out at least a year. ... 3B Evan Longoria was hitting second in the Rays lineup Wednesday night. He entered the game with one previous plate appearance in his career batting second. Manager Joe Maddon said he made the move hoping to “unlodge” Longoria from a slump in which he is batting .167 in his last 23 games. ... Rookie OF Wil Myers was batting clean-up for the second time. ... RHP Alex Cobb had a minor setback Tuesday in his first rehab outing after getting hit in the head by a line drive June 15. He left his rehab start after two pitches because of a blister on his right index finger. He is hoping to make his next start this weekend or early next week with a return to the Rays in early August.
