Village Harmony Teen World Music Ensemble to perform in Peterborough

PETERBOROUGH — Village Harmony, the Vermont based youth world music singing ensemble, returns to Peterborough for a concert on Thursday, July 25, at the Union Congregational Church on Concord Street.

Led by Suzannah Park, Gideon Creovoshay, and Natalie Nowytski, the program features Balkan and Ukrainian village music, songs from Caucasus Georgia, Appalachian ballads and clogging, American shape-note and gospel songs, a sea shanty or two and a set of early music pieces from Italy and Spain.

The 24 teenage singers come from eight states and France. Suggested admission at the door is $10, $5 for students and seniors. For more information call 924-3272.

Village Harmony is an umbrella organization based in Vermont dedicated to the study and performance of ethnic singing traditions from around the world.

Each summer, they sponsor 10 ensembles like this one, both in New England and in foreign countries, involving both teen and adult singers. Each group develops a unique sound with a different international team of leaders, but all share common traits: a powerful, natural, unrestrained, vocal sound; a remarkable variety of vocal styles and timbres, as appropriate to the many varieties of ethnic and traditional music; and the visible, vibrant community among the singers and audience as they share in a joyous celebration of music.

Go to www.villageharmony.org for more information.

Other dates in New Hampshire include: Tuesday, July 23, Unitarian Church, 274 Pleasant St., Concord.

Wednesday, July 24, Community Church, Tamworth.
