Goffstown Post 16 heads to playoffs
Legion baseball senior leagues wrapped up this week, with Goffstown’s Wesley-Wyman Post 16 clinching the second seed in District A.
A playoff date against Nashua-Hudson Post 8 is scheduled for Friday, July 26, at 4 p.m. All tournament games will be played at Memorial Field in Concord.
Post 16 sealed their ticket with a 3-2 12-inning win over Manchester Sweeney Post on Sunday, July 21, at Gill Stadium.
That was the first game of a double header with Sweeney. With a playoff berth assured, manager Tom Lamy gave his bench some playing time in the second game, which Sweeney won 6-1.
Goffstown did have one more game scheduled against Manchester Post 79, but that team is under suspension for a recruitment violation.
Bedford Post 54 managed to end their season on a high note with a 3-2 win over Keene on July 21 at Riley Field in Bedford, but will not be moving on to the post season. Bedford finishes the season with a 2-12 record.
Over in District B, Salem Post 63 had a roller coaster week but wound up on the outside of the post season as well.
On Wednesday, July 17, Salem’s C.J. Beaulieu threw a complete game no-hitter in an 8-0 win over Exeter Post 32. But Salem’s playoff hopes were dashed with back-to-back losses July 19 and 20.
Salem fell to Derry Post 9 11-5 on July 19. On July 20, they were one out away from a win, but Portsmouth Post 1 eked out a 12-7 10-inning win.
Salem did finish with a 6-1 win at home over Dover. That gives Post 63 an 8-10 record.
The winner of the state Legion tournament this weekend advances to the regional in Connecticut next weekend and the Legion World Series in North Carolina the weekend after.
