Goal of 100 holes of golf: Fun, fundraiser for Rotary

AMHERST — It's going to be a long day out on the links for golfers participating in the Milford Rotary's 19th annual 100 Holes of Golf Tournament.

Today at the Amherst Country Club, a hearty host of golfers will try their best to complete more than five rounds of golf in a single day to raise money for the Rotary's many programs, according to club president Ryan Hansen.

"We start at 6 a.m. and usually end around 7:30 p.m.," said Hansen. "Golfers hustle along the course and complete their 5-plus rounds in 2½ hours each. It's a long day but a great event that only comes together because of the hard work of a lot of volunteers."

There are three formats for playing — professional-style golf, team golf, and a more relaxed, just-for-fun format. Players are given golf carts, and throughout the day, food and drinks are brought out to the greens on special snack carts. Volunteers act as caddies, marking shots, finding balls and replacing divots.

The golfers raise money by asking friends and family to pledge a certain amount of money per hole. Though not every golfer lasts the whole day, the Milford Rotary raised $43,000 during the event last year.

Combined with the other fundraising events held by the Rotary each year, Hansen said the club contributes more than $125,000 in donations and services to Milford, Amherst, Wilton, Lyndeborough and Mont Vernon charities and scholars.
