Hanover Country Club's Toland leads stroke play tourney

Joe Toland of Hanover Country Club fashioned four birdies for a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the New Hampshire Golf Association's Stroke Play Championship at Green Meadow Golf Club in Hudson Monday.

Toland, who converted 13 pars, birdied holes 2 and 4 and finished 2-under on the front side. He made birdie on hole 13, bogeyed hole 14 and birdied the 18th hole to finish with a 3-under 69.

Trailing Toland in second place with a 71 are Josh Chamberlain of Crotched Mountain of Francestown, Joe Leavitt of Atkinson and Damon Salo of the Shattuck Golf Club in Jaffrey.

Chamberlain had a strong start, making birdies on holes 2, 3 and 9. He bogeyed hole 4, but still managed a 2-under score heading into the back nine. He parred every hole on the backside except hole 17 where he made bogey.

Leavitt, a former NHGA State Am winner, birdied holes 2, 9 and 18. He bogeyed holes 4 and 17 and finished his round with 13 pars.

Salo recovered from a shaky start after a bogey on hole 2 and a double bogey on hole 3. He recovered nicely with birdies on holes 4, 5 and 9. He got to 1-under with a birdie on hole 18.

Seven players in a logjam for fifth place at even-par 72 are Tyler Silver of Hanover, Eric Soderman of Hoodkroft of Derry, defending champion Ryan Kohler of Hooper Golf Club of Walpole, Jake Nutter of Manchester, Dylan Cowette of Manchester, Ian Landry of Loudon CC and Jeff Sullivan of Sky Meadow of Nashua.

Griffin Brown of Overlook CC of Hollis and Andrew Jankowski of Baker Hill GC of Newbury are deadlocked for 12th place at 1-over 73.

Eleven linksters knotted in 14th with a 2-over 74 are Nick Fairweather of Windham CC, Ryan Tombs of Manchester CC, Dan Arvanitis of Derryfield CC, two-time former champ Craig Steckowych of Portsmouth, Scott Underhill of Manchester, Ryan Fuller of Keene, Cameron Salo of Bretwood of Keene, Alexander Correia of Laconia, Connor Greenleaf of Windham, Chelso Barrett of Bretwood and Jon Malloy of The Oaks Golf Club of Somersworth.

Second-round play continues today in Hudson.
