Report says Red Sox owner to buy Boston Globe

Longtime sports writer Peter Gammons, on his website, www.GammonsDaily.com, reported Friday that Boston Red Sox owner John Henry's solo bid to purchase the Boston Globe from the New York Times Company has been approved.

"Sources say the New York Times Corporation has chosen John Henry as the new owner of the Boston Globe," posted Gammons. Gammons is employed by New England Sports Network, the cable sports network owned by the parent corporations of the Red Sox and Boston Bruins, as a baseball analyst. He was previously employed by the Boston Globe as a baseball columnist, and was a longtime baseball analyst for the ESPN network.

Henry's bid is believed to include an offer to purchase the print edition of the newspaper, the websites BostonGlobe.com and Boston.com, and other publications affiliated with the New England Media Group.

Elevate Communications, a firm that handles the Red Sox public relations, would not confirm or deny Gammons' report, answering a Union Leader reporter's request for comment with a brief statement saying there is "currently nothing to report."

Two requests for comment emailed to communications directors at New York Times Corporation were not returned.

The Globe previously reported that Henry had launched a solo bid for the newspaper after his sports investment group dropped out of the process more than a week ago.

The Boston Globe says that it has a daily circulation of 215,712 and a Sunday circulation of 362,849. Analysts estimate the New York Times may get only about $100 million back from the sale, after paying $1.1 billion to the Taylor family for the Globe back in 1993.

Gammons' website features analysis from Gammons and other top baseball analysts.
