DERRY — With the approval of a nearly 3,000-square-foot addition, Benson’s Hardware and Lumber Yard will be able to repair its vehicles and equipment inside, rather than outside.
The single-story garage will be at the corner of Rollins and Maple streets, across from the Derry Municipal Center.
“They have a property that fronts on Rollins Street out behind their lumber yard,” said Tim Peloquin of Promised Land Survey. “They store some of their vehicles and lumber and such along there.”
Peloquin said the new garage will basically be used as a service area for Benson’s equipment. Currently, the equipment is serviced outside the building.
“It will be less intrusive to traffic on the street, and there will be no outside work as a result of this,” said Peloquin. “They will simply be servicing the vehicles they have.”
The Planning Board unanimously approved the plan.
“This is about as straightforward as it gets,” said board member Jim MacEachren. “It’s a good addition to take something that is outside and put it inside a garage.”
Planning Board chairman David Granese said he is also looking forward to future plans from the Bensons, as an abandoned gas station on West Broadway has been demolished in preparation for future development.
“I’m looking forward to seeing those plans come through,” said Granese.
