Bedford three games away from winning title
The Bedford 9- to 10-year-olds are three games into the New England Regional Tournament in Cranston, R.I., and they are in contention to make the final.
After a rough start Sunday, Aug. 4, they have won two straight in pool play. With a record of 2-1, and more importantly a plus-16 run differential, a win Thursday, Aug. 8, could secure a spot in the finals.
On Aug. 4, Bedford faced off against Southington, Conn. They were cruising with a 2-0 lead until the top of the fourth when Southington erupted for eight runs.
Southington added three more runs while Bedford could not get anything going and wound up losing 11-2.
The Monday, Aug. 5, box score, on the other hand, could have been mistaken for a football line score.
Bedford was the road team to North Andover, Mass. In the top of the fifth and down 5-3, Bedford scored six runs to go up 9-5, sending 12 batters to the plate.
But Bedford would top that output in the top of the sixth, sending 17 batters to the plate and adding 11 more runs to take a commanding 21-5 lead.
North Andover would score two in the bottom of the sixth to make it 21-7. The game was called on the 10-run rule.
Tuesday against Windham, Maine, Bedford's bats remained hot. They scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first and cruised to an 18-7 win that was called after 3-1/2 innings, being up by 11.
These blowout wins actually help Bedford in a tiebreaker. Run differential is used and Bedford now sits at plus-16.
They have one more game on Thursday, Aug. 8, against Portsmouth, R.I. A win makes them 3-1 and adds to their run differential.
They must finish in the top two to play for the New England final. The winner plays the mid-Atlantic champ for the East region crown.
That is as far as the 9- to 10-year-olds go. There is no World Series for their age bracket, meaning Bedford sits just three games away from winning it all.
