Scott Brown to be keynote speaker at Lions Club dinner

NASHUA — Former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., will make another appearance in New Hampshire, this time as the keynote speaker for an upcoming event in Nashua.

Brown will speak at the Nashua Lions Club 90th anniversary dinner on Sept. 14 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

"We are honored that Senator Brown accepted our invitation and look forward to hearing how being a Lion has played a part in his life," Club President Elaine Lecius said in a statement.

Brown is a member and past president of the Wrentham, Mass., Lions Club. He previously co-sponsored legislation along with Sen. Jerry Moran to authorize a commemorative coin for the Lions' 100th anniversary in 2017.

Brown has made several public appearances in New Hampshire this year, including two visits to Nashua last spring. Brown, who has a vacation home in Rye, has not ruled out the possibility of establishing residency in the state and running against U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., next year.

In April, he spoke at the 11th annual "Keeping the Dream Alive" Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., dinner at the Crowne Plaza, speaking to a crowd of community and business leaders.

Brown shared his own struggles growing up in a broken family. His mother and father each married and divorced four times, and he was forced to live in 17 different homes by the time he had reached 18.

"We were a poor family," he said at the time, adding he is the luckiest man alive to have met the challenges and eventually become elected to the U.S. Senate.

Since that speech, Brown has eluded speculation that he may be a possible presidential contender in 2016.

Also speaking at the Lions Club anniversary dinner next month will be newly elected Lions Club International Director John Pettis Jr. of Merrimac, Mass.

The Nashua Lions were chartered on Sept. 26, 1923, and are the second-oldest club in the state, according to a news release. Throughout that time, the organization has offered more than $1 million in eye care and services to residents.

The anniversary celebration is open to the public, and tickets are available by calling 429-0561. The reception starts at 5:30 p.m, with dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m.
