High school boys', girls' soccer kicks off this afternoon

The NHIAA sports schedule starts to pick up steam today as boys’ and girls’ soccer joins the slate.

High school golf got the fall season started on Wednesday and field hockey will get under way next Tuesday.

The football schedule opens a week from tonight with 17 games under the lights. Girls’ volleyball begins the same day. The last sanctioned sport to open this fall will be co-ed unified soccer, which opens on Sept. 11.

One of the matchups to keep an eye on in the girls’ ranks today is Londonderry at Exeter. The four-time defending champion Blue Hawks will get an early test from one of last year’s semifinal teams.

Another notable Division I girls’ matchup has last year’s runner-up, Bedford, hosting Salem.

In Division III play, two of the projected contenders will meet today when Raymond visits Campbell of Litchfield.

On the boys’ side, two-time defending Division I champion Manchester Central begins the quest for No. 3 by hosting Merrimack. Another two-time defending champ, Bow in DIII, will open with a visit from Winnisquam of Tilton.

Division II champion Windham will entertain Manchester West today and two up-and-coming teams, Laconia and White Mountains Regional, will play at Whitefield.

One of the top teams from Division IV last year, Sunapee, will host Wilton-Lyndeborough, a team expected to take the step to the next level this year.
