UPDATED: Mom, kids found safe at Pawtuckaway State Park

NOTTINGHAM — A mother and her four kids who became lost while hiking on a trail at Pawtuckaway State Park were found safe Tuesday night.

Fire Chief Jaye Vilchock said the five were located around 9:25 p.m. by search crews less than a half-mile down Mountain Trail.

They were reported lost around 8:30 p.m.

Vilchock said the mother had a cell phone with her and called 911 for help when she realized they were lost in the woods.

The woman was camping at the park and was out for a hike with four children ages 12, 10, 7 and 2.

"It was very quick. We had a pretty good idea of where they were based on coordinates," Vilchock said.

Searchers used 911 coordinates, topographical software and a GPS to locate the family quickly, the chief said.

They were found shaken, but unhurt.

Fire and Game officers were called to the scene, but the call was canceled when the family was located.
