Oktoberfest brings Alps to the slopes at Attitash

Special to the Union Leader
September 05. 2013 12:21AM

BARTLETT - What New Hampshire festivals need: More cow bell. And keg tossing. Thank goodness the annual Attitash Oktoberfest can accommodate both.

The 16th annual Oktoberfest will be held at Attitash Mountain Resort Oct. 12-13 at Bear Peak. As in years past, this is a family event featuring live Bavarian music, food and children's activities. But let's not forget the sporting portion of the weekend which includes stein hoisting, the infamous keg toss contest and the Attitash Biergarten where elbows will be exercised drinking beers from brewers from around the region.Located in the Mt. Washington Valley in Northern New Hampshire's White Mountains Region, the Attitash Mountain Resort is a year-round destination for skiing in the winter and attractions such as the alpine slide and more recently, the Nor'Easter Mountain Coaster in summer.Doors to the festival open at noon that Saturday to the sounds of a real Oom-Pah-Pah Band. King Ludwig's Bavarian Band will be playing throughout the festival and offers authentic European fest music that includes yodeling, alphorns and yes, cowbell.“We yodel, sing the real German words, play the skis, and are all experienced and versatile musicians,” according to the King Ludwig website. Various shows include songs played on the cowbells, Schuhplatter dancing, alphorn tunes, contests, and entertaining skits. But the festival isn't all just for fun and love of beer and cowbells. On Saturday, the festival will hold its third annual Hills and Hops 5k Trail Run to benefit the Attitash Alpine Education Foundation. Further, half of the proceeds raised by the 50/50 raffles, held each day of the festival, will benefit the Bartlett/Jackson Fire Department.Tickets for the festival online and at the window are $10 for adults 21 and older, $5 for those ages 6 to 20 and free for children 5 and younger.
