Selectmen support adding rumble strips on Route 125

EPPING — Selectmen want rumble strips installed on both the centerline and shoulders of Route 125 as part of the state's plan to improve safety.

At a meeting Tuesday, selectmen voted to send a letter to state transportation officials expressing their support for the rumble strips.

The state plans to add the strips of grooved pavement along stretches of Route 125 from Plaistow to Rochester. They're designed to grab the attention of drivers before they drift over the centerline or veer off the road.

According to Ronald Grandmaison, project manager for the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Highway Design, the state was specifically looking to put rumble strips on the centerline through Epping.

"We strongly encourage centerline rumble strips just because you actually have that tendency of someone crossing the centerline and hitting an oncoming vehicle from the opposite direction," Grandmaison said.

Selectman Karen Falcone said she would like to see rumble strips along the shoulders of the highway as well.

Other selectmen agreed.

"One person who's playing with the radio and veers off of it that we could actually stop from getting into an accident, which in turn causes emergency services to have to go out, is well worth having both sides," Selectman Tom Dwyer said.

Grandmaison has met with towns on Route 125 in recent weeks to seek input from the public and town officials before moving ahead with the rumble strips.

Adding the strips in Epping likely won't start until next April or May at the earliest, he said.

Police Chief Michael Wallace supports the plan as well and urged the state to make sure that strips are installed in the area of the Route 87 intersection — an area known for crashes.

"I think that this is long overdue. I think this is something the town needs," he said.
