EEE found in Greenland mosquito testing

GREENLAND — Mosquitoes have tested positive for EEE, authorities said.

EEE mosquitoes "have been identified in the Valhalla Drive area," police said in an e-mail. "Please use bug spray."

Last month, a batch of mosquitoes tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Manchester.

EEE is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. EEE is a serious disease that carries a high mortality rate for those who contract the more serious encephalitis form of the illness.

Symptoms may include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck and sore throat. There is no treatment for the disease. Symptoms usually occur four to 10 days after being bitten.
