BEDFORD — Restaurant Tek-Nique owner Matt Trottier and staff want to offer their customers a new dining experience — an outdoor patio and entertainment.
The property owners, the Bedford Village Shoppes Condominium Association, will go before the board tonight, seeking site plan approval to build a driveway from Nashua Road into the rear parking area of the shopping center, and add a 72-seat outdoor seating area at the restaurant.
The existing restaurant has a capacity of about 100 guests. The proposed addition will require improvements to accommodate the increased capacity to meet building codes, such as fencing between the parking area and the outdoor seating. The outdoor patio will be defined by visual and spatial features to control the activities, according to the plan.
Restaurant Tek-Nique, at 170 Route 101 in the Bedford Village Shoppes, has been in business since May 2011 and offers casual fine dining with an American and European menu.
Brendan Kelley, manager of Tek-Nique, said business has been good and that the proposed outdoor dining is the next step in providing the ultimate eating experience.“There is a draw for outdoor seating in the spring, summer and fall,” said Kelley, who has been manager since January. “We have a few ideas to bring live music, outdoor cooking and other events.”
The property owners were granted a variance on Aug. 20 from the zoning board of adjustment to build a 22-foot access driveway off Nashua Road through the required buffer between a commercial and residential zone at 172-184 Route 101.
The 5.6-acre property was originally developed in 1979, and includes 45,649 square feet of retail, restaurant, office space and parking. The site is served by an on-site well and a septic system, which needs replacement. A separate application has been submitted to the town’s Department of Public Works for review of the water and sewer connections.
“The septic system at Bedford Village Shoppes is in failure so we’re in the process of connecting to municipal sewer on Nashua Road, which will go through that 41-foot strip that goes out from our parking lot onto Nashua Road,” said Allan Clark, of REI Service Corp., at the zoning board meeting. “At the same time, Pennichuck Water Works has water out there, so we’ll extend the water in, which will certainly increase our fire safety.”
The driveway plan would remove 17 parking spaces in the back area to be replaced with green space.
“So though we won’t have that buffer, we’re going to be increasing green space. Every effort will be made to maintain whatever trees that we can; however, between the water, sewer and the 22-foot paved road in a 41-foot area, we’ll leave what we can, but we’re not certain just how much would be left at this point,” Clark said.
The town’s planning department is recommending approval of the site plan for the access driveway and the restaurant’s proposed outdoor dining patio. Restaurant Tek-nique is currently open for lunch on Tuesdays through Saturdays, dinner Tuesday through Sunday, and for Sunday brunch.The planning board meeting will begin at 7 p.m. tonight at BCTV Studio, 10 Meetinghouse Road.
