Nashua South leads Alvirne in football game suspended by lightning

NASHUA — Nashua South quarterback Trevor Knight was in street clothes Thursday night, but junior fullback Andrew DeCarteret was in uniform and came ready to play.

With Knight sidelined with a dislocated thumb suffered in last weekend's victory over Spaulding of Rochester, DeCarteret helped South build a 21-0 lead over Alvirne of Hudson in a game that was suspended by lightning with 8:51 left in the third quarter.

DeCarteret gained 157 yards and scored two touchdowns on 17 rushing attempts before the contest was suspended. Nashua athletic director Lisa Gingras said the game will be completed today at Nashua's Stellos Stadium beginning at 3:45 p.m.

"He's a bowling ball," South coach Scott Knight (Trevor's father) said. "He was a starter at linebacker as a freshman. We know he's going to be a big part of our offense. He runs hard. He brings the pain."

South led 14-0 after one quarter and 21-0 at halftime. The officials stopped the game for a 30-minute lightning delay minutes after the third quarter began, and the contest was postponed shortly thereafter.
