Water Works resumes using normal disinfectant

MANCHESTER — Water Works announced Friday that it had resumed using normal disinfecting processes to reduce a taste of chlorine experienced by some residents.

The higher chlorine level has been in effect since mid-July, when tests detected higher-than-normal counts of bacteria.

According to a statement issued Friday, Water Works has shifted back to its usual disinfectant, chloramine, a chemical composed of chlorine and ammonia. The chemical is not as effective in killing bacteria, but lacks the taste and odor problems of straight chlorine.
