WEARE — Driving rains flooded the John Stark Regional High School gymnasium Thursday night, adding to damages that began a year ago and were exacerbated by a flood over Labor Day weekend, school officials said Friday.

Principal Christopher Corkery said water began rushing into the back portion of the school, including the gym and a technology wing, when the heaviest rains hit shortly after 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

“It was just pouring ... into the back hallway and into the gym,” Corkery said.

He said staff, including himself, were able to get the water mopped up by 6 p.m., but that custodial staff remained at the building until about 2 a.m. Friday to get any remaining moisture out.

“I went in this morning and it was bone dry to the touch,” he said Friday evening.

Corkery said the girls’ volleyball team has not been able to use the gym for games because of “a 10-foot hump” in the floor, but that school officials are trying to complete a “temporary” repair of the floors so the team can host a game next Friday. No classes were cancelled, he said, and “we had gym class in there (Friday).”

School Board Chairman Mark Zuckerman said a section of the floor was replaced last year and the entire floor was refinished. He said the district was in the process of working with engineers to address the problem when Thursday’s storm came.

Both said school officials will continue to have engineers work on a long-range solution.

“I think we’ve got a handle on where it’s coming from now,” Zuckerman said.

Zuckerman praised efforts of Corkery and other school staff.

“Everyone who was there pulled together to do what they could to try to stem the flow,” Zuckerman said.
