NH, Maine crews team up to rescue injured hiker

New Hampshire Fish and Game officers teamed up with members of the Maine Warden Service to rescue a Massachusetts woman injured in the Mahoosuc Mountains Sunday.

According to NH Fish and Game Lt. Wayne Saunders, at approximately 10 a.m. Sunday his department was notified of an injured hiker on the Appalachian Trail in the Mahoosuc Mountains, on the border of Maine and New Hampshire. Both states received the rescue call and both the Maine Warden Service and New Hampshire Conservation Officers responded, along with rescue teams from both states.

The Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue Team, AMC, and a NH Forest Ranger responded from New Hampshire, and the Mahoosuc Mountain Rescue Team responded from Maine to the area between Carlo Cal and Mount Success.

The University of Maine 4-H camp at Bryant Pond in Maine reported a girl in one of their groups had injured her knee and could not move. The camp sent out additional staff, including an EMT to attempt their own rescue, but decided they needed more help.

Rescue teams started hiking at approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday and reached the victim, identified as Aisling Clifford, 18, of Boston, Mass., at 2:30 p.m.

Rescuers started carrying Clifford down the mountains, coming out to the Success Mountain Trail at approximately 6:55 p.m., where she was transferred to an ambulance and transported to the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin.

Lt. Saunders said, "It is great to see two states working together on a rescue when you initially don't know which state it is in."

Clifford was injured .38 miles into New Hampshire, according to a GPS on scene said Saunders.
