Winnacunnet girls, Souhegan boys tops at Bobcat Invitational meet

Winnacunnet High of Hampton made a big impression Saturday in the 2013 Bobcat Invitational Cross-Country girls’ meet.

“I didn’t expect Winnacunnet to be that strong this season, but they certainly have depth,” said Portsmouth Christian head coach Mike Shevenell after the Warriors topped a field of 21 teams.

Mercedes McCoy (20:05.15, fifth place), Delaney Burns (20:21.69, 7th), Kelly Arsenault (20:54.88, 11th), Amanda Cestrone (20:56.54, 12th) and Molly Power (20:56.85, 13th), all of Winnacunnet, were among the top 15 finishers.

“That’s a solid team performance considering this is a tough meet with many good teams and runners,” said Shevenell. “When you place five in the top 15 in a field of a 120 runners, that means you have solid depth.”

Emma Newton of Hollis/Brookline (18:56.20) won the girls’ race and Maegan Doody of Oyster River of Durham was runner-up at 19:11.73.

Souhegan of Amherst, with 48 points, captured the boys’ meet with a close victory against runner-up Oyster River with 56 points.

“Souhegan has a very good team and so does Oyster River,” said Shevenell. “Those two teams finishing one and two isn’t a surprise to me.”

Eli Moskowitz of Souhegan won the boys’ race in 16:25.39, followed by Justin Trott of Winnacunnet in 16:29.73.
