SALEM — Police are investigating a shooting that reportedly took place near Shannon Road and Clubhouse Drive early Thursday evening.

About 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, a man contacted police and told him he was jogging in that area when he was involved in a verbal altercation with a motorist at the intersection.

"The motorist allegedly nudged out of the road towards the jogger, who then spit on the car after more words were exchanged," said Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten. "After the jogger passed the motorist, (the jogger) told police the motorist pointed a handgun out of the driver-side window and fired a round out of the car at him."

After the shot was fired, the vehicle then fled the area, the jogger told police.

Friday morning, police and the jogger searched the area and located a shell casing.

"Police were able to locate a potential suspect based on the vehicle description and the information provided by the jogger," said Patten. "Salem detectives are investigating the incident."

Patten asks anyone who was in the area at the time and may have observed the incident to contact the Salem Police Department at 893-1911 or the Southern New Hampshire Crimeline at 893-6600.
