Hassan says federal shutdown will hurt NH economy and families

CONCORD &#-; Gov. Maggie Hassan warned that the federal shutdown will harm the state&#';s economy and bring hardship to Granite State families.“I join the people of New Hampshire in their frustration over Congress&#'; inability to pass a clean continuing resolution to avert a shutdown of the federal government,” Hassan said. “The federal government shutdown will damage our economy and cause unnecessary hardship to New Hampshire families. It is simply unconscionable that, at the expense of the needs of our people, some members of Congress have chosen to put their extreme ideology first and continue to fight battles they have already lost.”The House and Senate failed to agree on a continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded on midnight when the federal fiscal year ends and the new fiscal year begins.U.S. House Republicans insisted that the Affordable Care Act either not be funded or delayed a year as part of the bill, while the U.S. Senate refused to accept either proposal and insisted on a “clean” continuing resolution allowing government to spend under levels appropriated the previous fiscal year.Hassan said state government will continue to operate, although there may be some disruption in individual programs that are federally funded.“In New Hampshire, we come together to make things work, finding common-sense, bipartisan solutions that maintain our state&#';s high quality of life, and Washington needs to do the same,” Hassan said.
