New assistant town manager in Salem gets down to work

SALEM — Leon Goodwin III, a former Keene assistant city attorney, started work as Salem’s new assistant town manager and director of community affairs on Tuesday.

In Keene, Goodwin was primarily responsible for providing staff support to the planning and zoning boards.

In Salem, Goodwin will oversee all aspects of community affairs, including planning, zoning, health, inspections, recreation, community development and human services, according to Town Manager Keith Hickey. He said Goodwin has a great knowledge of zoning, planning, and code enforcement procedures, and a reputation for being a collaborative and creative problem solver.

“I look forward to working with Leon,” Hickey said. “His capabilities, willingness to assist those he comes in contact with, will be a benefit to the town of Salem and its residents.”

Goodwin will also help Hickey with special projects, focus on community outreach, and serve as the town’s chief building official.

Goodwin will be taking on many of the responsibilities once handled by former community development director William Scott, who left in June to take a position as the deputy community development director in Amesbury, Mass.He will make $94,000 in his new position in Salem.
