FRANKLIN – In two very close elections, Mayor Ken Merrifield was re-elected Tuesday, and former Franklin High School football coach Greg Husband was elected to the same school board that chose not to rehire him as coach last spring.

Merrifield survived a write-in challenge from Glen Morrill, 521-468.

"I am very honored to be selected again as mayor," Merrifield said after the votes were tallied Tuesday night. "I'm looking forward to promoting our city for another two years."?

Merrifield won two of the city's three wards. In Ward 1, he received 212 votes to Morrill's 184; in Ward 2, Merrifield had 144 votes to Morrill's 100. In Ward 3, Morrill got 184 votes to Merrifield's 165.

Morrill could not be reached for comment.

Husband, who was at the center of controversy last spring when the school board chose not to rehire him because of alleged misconduct by his football players, was elected to the Ward 1 school board seat with 176 votes.

Challenger Gwen Hall had 165.

Also in Ward 1, incumbent City Councilor Arthur "Ted" Starkweather won with 285 votes, while write-in challenger Marty Russo had 45. Incumbent Councilor Tony Giunta was reelected with 273 votes to write-in challenger Jerry Audet's 67 votes.

Another Ward 1 school board seat was won by incumbent Charles "Chad" Carey, who had 217 votes. Write-ins Charles Farmer had 80 votes and Gwen Hall had 38 votes.

Ward 1's supervisor of the checklist race was won by Lawrence Hennessy, who had 40 votes to Catherine Pirro's 19.

In Ward 2, incumbent Douglas Boyd was reelected to the city council with 201 votes. There was no opposition.

The Ward 2 school board race was won by Angie Carey, who had 126 votes to Carol Edmunds' 72 write-in votes.

In Ward 3, incumbent City Councilor Paul C. Trudel had 158 votes to challenger Steve Barton's 163. Tim Dow was elected to the Ward 3 school board seat, unopposed, with 284 votes.
