NH Marine, 80, to receive overdue medals

EPSOM — The family of an 80-year-old Marine and Korean War veteran in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's is thrilled to see that he is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

Edward Caron, a Manchester native who is described by his daughter Deborah Caron as a proud Marine, has spent most of his life in New Hampshire, where he raised five children with his wife of 55 years, Pauline, while working as a long-distance truck driver.

"He has taught us how to be strong and how to work hard for all we have and never let anything get in your way of what you want," Deborah Caron said of her father. "He is very loved."

Deborah Caron said her father — who grew up on a farm in Manchester and now has five children, 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren — has been reticent to discuss his service during the war.

Deborah said the family first became aware of the many medals their father was entitled to after her sister made a call to the White House inquiring about her father's service.

"Then we got a phone call saying that he was entitled to between 15 and 18 medals," Deborah said.

One of the impediments to having Edward honored is the fact that he is in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's, which makes time precious and travel difficult, but the office of U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R N.H., has facilitated the process, another daughter, Cynthia Kettle, said.

"Senator Kelly Ayotte's office has been extremely helpful and accommodating to us," she said.

Ayotte spokesperson Liz Johnson said Ayotte will present Caron with his medals sometime in the next few weeks.

"Senator Ayotte regularly holds special ceremonies to present New Hampshire veterans with their hard-earned service medals, and she considers it a great honor to recognize these heroes," Johnson said.
