Kyle Wilcox scampered 20 yards into the end zone on a third-down play in the fourth overtime to help host Penn fend off Dartmouth, 37-31, in the Ivy League opener for both teams and the longest game in conference history in Philadelphia Saturday.
The Quakers (2-1, 1-0 Ivy) snapped the Big Green's seven-game road winning streak while beating Dartmouth (1-2, 0-1 Ivy) for the sixth straight year, the last five of which have been decided by one score.
The Big Green twice had opportunities to win the game outright, but a 21-yard field-goal attempt was blocked on the final play of regulation and a 34-yarder went wide in the first overtime after the Dartmouth defense had kept Penn off the board.
In the fourth OT, the Quakers advanced five yards on the first two plays before handing off to Wilcox, who started up the middle but bounced to the outside where he was able to get around the corner and beat the defense to the corner of the end zone to end the game.
Bentley 32, St. Anselm 27: At Waltham, Mass., the Hawks led 27-26 with 5:52 remaining in the game but could not hold on.
Bentley (3-2) scored with 2:42 remaining on a 13-yard run from Dan Guodagnoli to account for the final score.
Just minutes before, St. Anselm's Matt Gordon had returned a fumble 22 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
The game was tight throughout, with Bentley scoring six in the first on a pair of Micheal Baron field goals. Keith Charles gave St. Anselm a 7-6 lead after one frame with a three-yard run.
The Hawks (0-5) went ahead 14-6 on a 19-yard TD pass from Andrew Murphy to Justin Bernard.
Bentley scored the next 20 points on two more Baron field goals and touchdowns from Chris Malonis (22-yard pass from Guodagnoli) and Bryan Hardy (8-yard fumble return) to make the score 26-21 Bentley.
Murphy was 23-for-28 for 197 yards, one TD and one interception. Isaac Jorgensen had 12 tackles for St. Anselm.
Westfield State 31, Plymouth 0: At Plymouth, the host Panthers managed just 105 yards of offense while Westfield's Michael Mercandante rushed for 79 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Plymouth fell to 1-4 on the season and Westfield State improved to 3-1.
Mercandante scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter to make it 7-0 and Westfield State pushed the lead to 17-0 at the half with a Michael Orellana 21-yard field goal and Tom Rich 70-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Nicol.
Westfield State added single touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters on 12-yard run from Mercandante and 35-yard interception return from Nick Adams.
