Rochester man arrested after police chase in Salem

SALEM — A Rochester man was arrested by Salem police Saturday night, following a wild chase that ended with damage to two police cruisers.
Salem Police Sgt. Jason Smith said that, at 6:20 p.m. Saturday, police began following a 2001 blue Isuzu reportedly moving erratically and heading north on Route 28. While giving chase, police received information that the vehicle was stolen.

The pursuit led vehicles on to Gordon Avenue, where Smith said officers allegedly observed the driver, identified as Anthony T. Monbleau, 22, of 18 King St., in Rochester injecting himself with a substance later identified as heroin.
The vehicle fled the scene, then headed onto Route 93, where Salem police abandoned pursuit. The Isuzu later exited the highway at Exit 1 and headed back into Salem, and police resumed their pursuit. The chase eventually ended in the parking lot of Heavenly Donuts, where it rammed two Salem police cruisers, causing extensive damage and injuring two officers.

Smith said one officer was treated at the scene, and while another was treated and released at a local hospital.

Monbleau was charged with three counts of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, theft of motor vehicle, possession of heroin, disobeying an officer, resisting arrest, transporting drugs, driving after suspension and a probation violation.

He is scheduled to be arraigned today in Salem District Court.
