Timberlane Regional High School will soon have new school resource officer

PLAISTOW — There will soon be a new school resource officer at Timberlane Regional High School, Superintendent Earl Metzler said.

In making the announcement at a recent School Board meeting, Metzler also discounted recent reports that he was responsible for removing Joan Marsilia from the position of resource officer at the high school, a job she held for more than a decade.

“I’ve gotten some calls from friends saying they knew I was the superintendent of schools but that they didn’t know I was in charge of the police department as well,” said Metzler. “We didn’t reassign a resource officer.”

He said there is no discord between himself and the police department and that he has worked closely with Plaistow Police Chief Steven Savage.

“I am proud to say that a new school resource officer will be announced shortly,” said Metzler. He said the candidate has experience working with children and worked at a juvenile detention center before becoming a police officer.

Metzler said the district and the police department are also exploring the possibility of bringing in a second resource officer to help provide coverage at the middle school and the performing arts center.

The superintendent said the schools and the police department would work together to determine when the officers would be most valuable on the school campus.

“We need a little bit of flexibility with the police department, and we’re working on those details,” said Metzler. “Some of that has to do with the police union, with our expectations and with training.”
