Merrimack day-care teacher charged in assault on toddler

MERRIMACK – A day care teacher at The Learning Experience is accused of assaulting a 2-year-old child in her care.

Sharon P. Quigley, 51, of 17 Ponemah Hill Road, Milford, was charged Friday with simple assault. Police said a complaint was filed Oct. 3.

She is accused of assaulting a 2-year-old girl enrolled at the Route 101-A day care center.

Detective Scott Park said Quigley is accused of grabbing the toddler around the waist causing a minor injury. She was seen by medical personnel who noted the bruising, he said.

Deborah O'Byrne, vice president of operations at The Learning Experience's corporate headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla., said Quigley was removed from her classroom and immediately terminated after the alleged incident, which she said happened on Oct. 4 at 4:25 p.m.

She would not comment on the allegation, but said the center cooperated with the police investigation which is ongoing.

"We have given them access to anything they want," she said. "It's been completely transparent."

She said the center hired Quigley after background screening and followed all state rules and regulations in employing her.

What's next:Quigley is free on $1,500 personal recognizance bail pending a Nov. 12 arraignment in 9th Circuit Court, Merrimack District Division.
