SHARON — Police officers from the Monadnock Region Special Response Team responded to a call on Jarmany Hill Road Sunday night that turned into a three-hour standoff with officers.

Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard said about a dozen officers responded to the scene.

Douglas Riley, 51, of Jarmany Hill Road was taken into custody and charged with simple assault, criminal threatening with a deadly weapon, a class B felony, and felony manufacturing of a controlled drug.

Peterborough police initially responded Sunday at 11:34 p.m. when a resident reported her 28-year-old son had just been assaulted by her husband and threatened with a handgun.

She reported her husband was intoxicated and that she and her son were able to leave the house and were in another town.

Peterborough police surrounded the home with extra officers from the regional Special Reaction Team.

After about three hours, Riley came out.

“He didn’t immediately comply with arrest, but he was taken into custody with a minimal amount of force,” Guinard said Thursday. “He was not Tasered, no shots were fired and no one was injured.”

After he was arrested, police executed a search warrant to look for firearms when they found plants they believed to be marijuana, Guinard said. The plants are being tested at the state forensic lab to ensure the charge is correct, he said.

After Riley was charged he was held on $5,000 cash bail and held overnight at the Hillsborough County House of Corrections in Manchester.

At his arraignment Monday at the 8th Circuit Court District Division in Jaffrey, he entered no pleas for two of the charges and not guilty on the simple assault charge.

His bail was reduced to $2,000 cash, which he later posted and he was released from custody.

Riley is expected to return to court Oct. 21 for a probable cause hearing.
