Alvirne High School evacuated following 'suspicious odor'

HUDSON - The weekend started somewhat earlier for Alvirne High School students and staff on Friday when the school was evacuated as a safety precaution.

School officials reported an 'unidentified odor' throughout the building earlier in the day, ultimately leading them to shut down the school pending further inspection.

Police said the building is being inspected for a possible gas leak.

The students were brought to a nearby athletic field, where they boarded buses bound for home shortly before noontime.

Most of the school's afternoon and evening classes have been cancelled, with the exception of varsity football.

The school will be open Saturday morning for scheduled PSAT testing, officials confirmed.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
