Monarchs fall to Hartford in shootout
The Manchester Monarchs went to a shootout for the fifth time in six games, falling 4-3 at Hartford on Friday night.
The Monarchs (3-0-2) play their first home game of the season Saturday night when the Providence Bruins visit Verizon Wireless Arena for a 7 p.m. game.
Marek Hrivik and Brandon Mashinter beat Monarchs goalie Martin Jones in the shootout while Brandon Kozun notched the only Manchester goal.
Hartford (4-0-1) scored two quick goals in the third period to erase a 3-1 Manchester lead.
Hrivik scored at 14:05 and Aaron Johnson netted a shorthanded goal just 24 seconds later.
Linden Vey had a chance to win the game in overtime for Manchester when he was awarded a penalty shot, but Hartford goalie Cam Talbot made the save.
Vey was also the final shooter for Manchester in the shootout, but was again stymied by Talbot. Tyler Toffoli gave Manchester a 1-0 lead at 9:45 of the first period, converting a Vey pass for his team-leading third goal of the season.
Hartford tied the game at 15:56 when Danny Kristo beat Jones for the goal.
Tanner Pearson put Manchester on top 2-1 early in the second period. Pearson broke in alone on Talbot and beat the Wolfpack goalie with a forehand shot.
Colin Miller scored his first pro goal to give the Monarchs a 3-1 lead at 14:41 of the second period. Miller one-timed a shot from the left circle during a five-on-three power play.
The Monarchs announced on Friday that veteran defenseman Andrew Campbell has been named team captain and defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk and Vey were named alternate captains. Campbell is in his sixth season with the team.
The Monarchs also announced Friday that defenseman Alex Roach has been loaned to Ontario of the ECHL.
