UNH football up in polls; hockey team drops

Sean McDonnell’s decision to go for the two-point conversion and the win kept the University of New Hampshire’s playoff hopes alive. UNH’s 29-28 victory against No. 12 ranked Villanova on Saturday at Cowell Stadium in Durham also allowed the Wildcats to move up in the football polls.

The Sports Network FCS Top 25 poll saw the Wildcats move up five spots to No. 20. UNH moved up one spot to No. 22 in the FCS Coaches Poll. Villanova (4-3) fell six spots to No. 18 in the Sports Network poll and tumbled six steps to No. 17 in the FCS Coaches Poll.

McDonnell could have played for the tie after Sean Goldrich’s four-yard touchdown run, but his decision to go for the win paid off when Chris Setian rushed for the winning two-point conversion.

North Dakota State (7-0) maintained its top ranking in both polls, but quietly the University of Maine (6-1) is ranked No. 11 in the Sports Network Poll, up from No. 14 last week. The Black Bears also moved up three spots to No. 14 in the FCS Coaches Poll.

UNH must keep winning if it hopes to claim a playoff berth.

The Wildcats hit the road to face Stony Brook Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest.

The UNH men’s hockey team slid one spot to No. 14 in the USCHO.com Division I poll. The Wildcats hosted No. 4 Michigan and managed a 1-1 tie on Friday and a 3-2 overtime loss Saturday. UNH (1-2-1) remained No. 13 in the weekly USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine college hockey poll.

UNH has one game this weekend, playing at Rensselaer on Saturday.

Minnesota (4-0-0) took over the top spot in both hockey polls.
