College Football: Wildcats cruise over Stony Brook

Sophomore quarterback Sean Goldrich and senior wide receiver Justin Mello teamed up for three touchdowns to lead No. 20-ranked New Hampshire to a 31-13 win over Stony Brook in Stony Brook, N.Y, on Saturday afternoon.

UNH won its third straight game and improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Stony Brook fell to 3-4 and 2-3.

The win was UNH's first on the road this season.

Now the Wildcats need another to keep their momentum going towards the FCS playoffs.

They play at William & Mary next week. The Tribe knocked off No. 17 James Madison at home on Saturday. William & Mary is 5-3 and 2-2.

Goldrich completed 15 of his 29 passes for 186 and the three scores. He has passed for eight touchdowns for the season. Mello had three touchdown receptions coming into the game and doubled up that total.

His first score put UNH on top late in the first period.

Stony Brook scored first with a field goal and UNH answered with a safety for a World Series-like 3-2 score.

Goldrich and Mello hooked up on a 23-yard touchdown pass and UNH took the lead for good.

UNH senior running back Chris Setian punched in a 1-yard TD with 9:37 left in the second period for a 16-3 lead. Another Stony Brook field goal made it 16-6 at the halftime break.

Mike MacArthur, UNH's senior kicker from North Hampton pushed the lead to 19-6 with his sixth field goal of the year from 33 yards.

Stony Brook answered with its only touchdown of the game on a Lyle Negron to Will Tye 8-yard pass to make it 19-13 with 3:33 left in the third period.

The Wildcats responded with two more Goldrich to Mello scores to put the game away. The first came on the last play of the third period and covered 15 yards and the second went for 36 yards in the fourth quarter.

UNH averages 482 yards of offense and was held to 336 yards.

The Wildcat defense, on the other hand, held Stony Brook to 286 yards.
