BRENTWOOD — A 26-year-old man was sentenced to 4 to 8 years in state prison on Monday after he admitted to beating a patron outside of the Poker Room in Hampton Falls in January.
Bryan Lisio, of Hampton, pleaded guilty to robbery and two counts of second-degree assault for beating 64-year-old Robert Carleton in the head with a BB gun and choking him during the attack.
The sentence was handed down in Rockingham County Superior Court nearly two months after Judge N. William Delker rejected an earlier plea deal for Lisio that would have given him less time behind bars.
Lisio fled with $80 in cash on the night of the Jan. 31 robbery, and later bragged to a friend at a bar that he had been in a fight earlier in the night. Lisio showed the friend a $20 bill with blood on it, according to police.
Carleton told police that when he got out of his car, a man dressed in black and armed with a handgun approached and ordered him to get to his knees. Carleton ran toward the Poker Room, but Lisio caught him by the jacket and dragged him between two cars before striking him in the head with the gun, police said.
In addition to the prison term, Lisio received two suspended prison sentences of 3½ to 7 years that can be imposed consecutively if he violates the terms of his parole.
Delker said he wanted a sentence that took into account the impact the attack had on Carleton's life and the remorsefulness Lisio expressed at an earlier hearing.
"Despite this being a very, very serious offense, you seem to recognize what you've done is way beyond the pale," he said.
Delker said he wanted to ensure that the sentence also made clear that crimes like Lisio's would not be tolerated.
Lisio has spent 266 days in county jail, which will count toward his prison sentence. He will be required to undergo drug and alcohol counseling. Delker also ordered to Lisio to have no contact with Carleton.
