UNH women win America East cross country title

The University of New Hampshire women's cross country team won its second America East championship, to go with one it collected in 2003, on Saturday at Binghamton, N.Y.

On the men's side, junior John Prizzi won the America East individual title with a time of 24 minutes, 55.22 seconds over the 8-kilometer course.

The UNH men finished fourth as a team.

The Wildcat women finished second each of the last three years to Stony Brook and were looking to get over that hurdle, coach Rob Hoppler said heading into the race.

The Wildcats did on Saturday by placing their first five runners in the top 12 spots in the race.

Freshman Ellie Purrier led the way with a sixth-place finish and senior Anne Twombly of Exeter was seventh.

Chelsey Serrano, a junior out of Manchester and Trinity High School, started a string of three straight Wildcats in 10th place. Senior Elise Beattie was 11th and sophomore Rose Donegan was 12th.

Freshman Sarah Kieran was 16th and Cayla Pellegrini, a senior out of Derry and Pinkerton Academy, was a spot behind her.

UNH finished with 46 points and Stony Brook was next with 63. Vermont had 77 and Albany 82.

The top UNH men's finishers after Prizzi were junior Jeff Moretti in eighth, senior Kent Harlow in 11th and Sam Gagnon, a junior out of Hooksett and Manchester Central, in 23rd.

UMBC won the tight men's race with 58 points and was followed by Binghamton with 65, Stony Brook with 70 and New Hampshire with 72.
