New director excited about next chapter for library
Vinton came on board as the library's new director in the middle of September. He said there were a number of personal and professional reasons why he decided to take the position.
For Vinton, the Plaistow position comes after a career working at a number of college and public libraries, including stints in the University of Maryland system and at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
"Libraries are really community anchors," said Vinton. "Communities trust their libraries. Being part of a social institution that is so well liked is a good feeling."
"Libraries are special places," he said.
Vinton said the plans he has had percolating for improvements at the library mainly fall on the programming side.
Keeping up with rapidly changing technology is also an important goal.
By focusing on technology, he said, libraries can help people further their careers and stay in touch with one another.
"It's been pretty busy with the budget season getting under way, and there is a lot going on," said Vinton. "When I can, I do get out of the office and say hi to folks," said Vinton. "They've been great. My colleagues, the patrons and town officials have all been very welcoming."
"I like nonfiction and I tend to read a lot of travel stories," Vinton said. "There's still a lot of teenager in me."
