Rochester road closed after mid-afternoon crash

ROCHESTER - Walnut Street was not expected to reopen until around 7 Monday evening after a mid-afternoon crash today.
Police said at about 1:20 p.m., a 2005 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Edward M. Deal, 60, of Rochester, went off the road and struck some trees on the shoulder of the roadway.
The accident happened in the area of of 239 Walnut St.
Emergency personnel found the driver trapped and the vehicle on fire when they arrived on the scene. A passerby and a police officer used fire extinguishers to put out the flames. Rochester Fire arrived and subsequently put out the fire. The fire department used their extraction tool to free the driver.
Deal was transported by Frisbie EMS to Skyhaven Airport and was taken by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, with serious injuries.
The Strafford County Regional TAR team was activated and responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.
Walnut Street between Sampson Road and Estes Road remains closed while the accident is investigated. The scene is expected to remain closed for the next few hours. At this time, police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
