FREMONT — The school board has offered interim Fremont School District Superintendent Betsey Cox-Buteau a new five-year contract.

In a 4-1 vote, the board approved the offer Tuesday night and is now negotiating the terms of the proposal.

Cox was hired as a full-time interim superintendent for the district July 15 under a contract that ends June 30 and pays an annual salary of $90,000 plus benefits.

She replaced Michelle Langa, who became Fremont’s superintendent in July 2012 but resigned before the end of the 2012-2013 school year.

According to the board, the decision to offer Cox the job came after evaluation forms were provided to anyone interested in weighing in on her performance as interim superintendent.

Some 80 evaluation forms were filled out by teachers, staff members, community members and parents.

“In addition to performance objectives, evaluation participants were also asked what qualities they would like the superintendent of our district to possess. Based on the school board’s evaluation of Dr. Cox’s performance thus far and the combined feedback of the 80 evaluation forms that were reviewed, a decision was made to choose Dr. Cox as our next superintendent and forgo appointing a search committee,” the board said in a statement.

Those who submitted the forms listed professionalism balanced with approachability, leadership skills, collaborative problem-solving skills, strong communication skills and an individual interested in a long-term commitment to the district as some of the qualities they would like to see in the new superintendent.

“The school board believes that Dr. Cox brings a high degree of stability and strong leadership skills to our SAU office.” the board said.

Cox said she and the board have worked well together since she started in July.

While a five-year contract is longer than most offered to superintendents, Cox said it would bring some stability to the position.

“(The board) got feedback from the community that they wanted the office to settle down,” she said.

Cox said she will be working with the board on goals for the district.

“Of course we want to have the best school and have the highest level of learning among our students and a high quality culture in our school,” she said.

Before coming to Fremont, Cox served a year as interim superintendent for the Mascenic Regional School District. She also worked for three years as associate superintendent for School Administrative Unit 41 in Hollis.
