Allen Lessels' UNH Notebook: Wildcats put best skate forward

DURHAM

THE University of New Hampshire should know within a month whether NCAA Regionals for men's hockey are coming back to Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester and whether the NCAA women's hockey championships are returning to the Whittemore Center.

UNH has bids in on those events, as well as on the NCAA Skiing championships.

The NCAA is due to announce the bid winners on Dec. 11.

UNH bid on the men's regionals for 2015 and 2017. The school has hosted the event five times.

"I'm confident and hopeful we'll get them again," said deputy director of athletics Steve Metcalf on Tuesday night. "I think we do as good a job at hosting the regionals as anyone and historically we've had a great crowd."

UNH hosted the Northeast Regionals last March at the Verizon and also served as the host in 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2011.

New Hampshire administrators put in a bid for the 2016 NCAA women's championships. The school also hosted in 2002 and 2005.

The NCAA listed UNH and the Whittemore Center along with three other schools as finalists for women's championships from 2015-18. The problem would be if other schools want the same year, Metcalf said.

"I'd like to think we have a real good chance and I know we can do an excellent job," Metcalf said. "That said, I don't know what year the other schools are interested in."

UNH put in for the 2017 NCAA skiing championships.

The men's soccer team plays Hartford at home in an America East tournament semifinal match tonight at 7:30 on Bremner Field.

The Wildcats are the No. 2 seed in the tournament and are 12-5-0.

Hartford, the No. 3 seed, is 14-3-3.

UNH beat Hartford, 2-0, at home on Oct. 16. Albany plays at No. 1 UMBC in the other semifinal. The championship will be Saturday at the home of the highest remaining seed.
