Fitzwilliam mining foes hold fundraiser

FITZWILLIAM — In an effort to raise money to combat a lawsuit from a company seeking to resume operations at a long abandoned quarry site in town, the Fitzwilliam Inn is hosting a “non-mining dining experience,” Saturday sponsored by the group Concerned Citizens of Fitzwilliam.

The buffet fundraiser will include live music and dancing.

Many residents of the town have expressed concerns about reopening granite mining operations, ranging from noise, health, safety and the rural character of the town.

The long-dormant Webb Hill Quarry in Fitzwilliam is owned by Aaron Olson and Kim Olson of Rindge.

Fitzwilliam Granite Company, registered to Kim Olson, was started in July 2012 for the purpose of selling granite, according to the N.H. Secretary of State’s Office.

Terry Silverman, an abutter to the quarry, said the lawsuit is in the discovery phase, during which several residents of the town have been deposed. The dinner has been organized to help the Concerned Citizens group, which is an informational group, pay for legal expenses incurred by the lawsuit, he said.

Silverman is chairman of the town Planning Board and has recused himself from any Planning Board business regarding the quarry.

The company, however, has not yet applied to the town to resume quarry operations.

The buffet meal is to include chili and cornbread with an assortment of side dishes, tea and coffee.

The buffet will be served from 5 to 8:30 p.m., after which music and dancing will begin.

Tickets for the dinner can be purchased at the door for $22, with $10 of each admission to be donated to the cause and matched by a donation from the Laurel Lake Association.
